Florence + The Machine – “Delilah” (Choreographer: Holly Blak

My pick: FKA Twigs – “M3LL155X” (Choreographer: FKA Twigs)

“M3LL155X” is beyond words to me, and I’m so excited to see twigs nominated for her work. As the creator, director and performer of all her work, she deserves a win here.

MAIN CATEGORIES

BEST NEW ARTIST

Bryson Tiller
Desiigner
Zara Larsson
Lukas Graham
DNCE

My pick: Desiigner

Because why not?

BREAKTHROUGH LONG FORM VIDEO

Florence + The Machine – The Odyssey
Beyoncé – Lemonade
Justin Bieber – PURPOSE: The Movement
Chris Brown – Royalty
Troye Sivan – Blue Neighbourhood Trilogy

My pick: Beyoncé – Lemonade

I won’t even pretend I’ve actually watched any of these, but I’m picking Beyoncé because duh.

BEST ELECTRONIC VIDEO

Calvin Harris & Disciples – “How Deep Is Your Love”
99 Souls ft. Destiny’s Child & Brandy – “The Girl Is Mine”
Mike Posner – “I Took A Pill In Ibiza”
Afrojack – “SummerThing!”
The Chainsmokers ft. Daya – “Don’t Let Me Down”

My pick: 99 Souls ft. Destiny’s Child & Brandy – “The Girl Is Mine”

This category is rather uninspiring, but this video is wonderful. It’s a real standout and it helps that I love the tune.

BEST ROCK VIDEO

All Time Low – “Missing You”
Coldplay – “Adventure Of A Lifetime”
Fall Out Boy ft. Demi Lovato – “Irresistible”
twenty one pilots – “Heathens”
Panic! At The Disco – “Victorious”

My pick: twenty one pilots – “Heathens”

This category sucks because none of these are rock songs. It’s all pop, but I chose “Heathens” because it’s the only song I could sit through and watch the video for without rolling my eyes out of my head.

BEST POP VIDEO

Adele – “Hello”
Beyoncé – “Formation”
Justin Bieber – “Sorry”
Alessia Cara – “Wild Things”
Ariana Grande – “Into You”

My pick: Beyoncé – “Formation”

This video should be unbeatable this year.

BEST HIP HOP VIDEO

Drake – “Hotline Bling”
Desiigner – “Panda”
Bryson Tiller – “Don’t”
Chance The Rapper ft. Saba – “Angels”
2 Chainz – “Watch Out”

My pick: Chance The Rapper ft. Saba – “Angels”

This video is as warm as the song itself, and as someone who has a special place (and longing) for Chicago in her heart, this video is the mandatory pick for this category. Honorable mentions are “Watch Out,” because it’s funny, but that product placement though uuugghhh. And I honestly would have picked “Hotline Bling” to win this category, but it’s not a hip-hop song so I refuse to give it the w here.

BEST COLLABORATION

Beyoncé ft. Kendrick Lamar – “Freedom”
Fifth Harmony ft. Ty Dolla $ign – “Work From Home”
Ariana Grande ft. Lil Wayne – “Let Me Love You”
Calvin Harris ft. Rihanna – “This Is What You Came For”
Rihanna ft. Drake – “Work” (short version)

My pick: Beyoncé ft. Kendrick Lamar – “Freedom”

I can’t find the actual music video online anywhere, Bey’s legal team weeerks. So I’ve attached the live performance of the song. This collaboration can’t not win.

BEST FEMALE VIDEO

Adele – “Hello”
Beyoncé – “Hold Up”
Sia – “Cheap Thrills”
Ariana Grande – “Into You”
Rihanna ft. Drake – “Work” (short version)

My pick: Sia – “Cheap Thrills”

I think this video is underrated! I love the nod to 60s era television and the message of being different, yourself and having fun. And I also love all the dance references, especially the Time Warp shout out at the end, ayeee.

VIDEO OF THE YEAR

Adele – “Hello”
Beyoncé – “Formation”
Drake – “Hotline Bling”
Justin Bieber – “Sorry”
Kanye West – “Famous”

My pick: Beyoncé – “Formation”

This is the video of the year, no doubt about it. Hot line Bling is a contender, as it was a popular culture world changer, but “Formation” is a beautifully created political piece tackling social issues revolving around the black community, including police brutality, poverty post-Hurricane Katrina, and the Black Lives Matter movement. It’s stunning, celebratory and woke. Side note, “Famous” is nominated? Wooow, it’s lit.

The MTV Video Music Awards will take place at Madison Square Garden on August 28 at 9 p.m. E.S.T.
